Commentary (Hansen)—Limited Small-Cell Lung Cancer: A Potentially Curable Disease
نویسنده
چکیده
The article by Sherman et al is a broad review of the recent developments in the treatment of patients with small-cell lung cancer who present with limited disease. Intially, the authors emphasize that the increasing use of more intensive and refined staging procedures, such as computed tomography (CT) scan and, more recently, positron-emission tomography (PET) scan, have resulted in stage migration. This phenomenon has led to improved outcomes of both limited and extensive disease, but has not necessarily improved overall survival.

Triage of Limited Versus Extensive Disease on 18F-FDG PET/CT Scan in Small Cell lung Cancer
Objective(s): Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is an aggressive neuroendocrine carcinoma, which accounts for 10-15% of pulmonary cancers and exhibits early metastatic spread. This study aimed to determine the added value of 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging in tumor, node, and metastasis (TNM) staging of SCLC, compared to the conventional computed tomography (CT) scan and its potential role as a prognosticat...

Background: Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a highly aggressive tumor. Objective: To evaluate the survival and time to progression of patients with SCLC admitted to a chest disease center in Istanbul, Turkey. Methods: Based on the reports of a pulmonary oncology clinic, data regarding performance status (PS), clinical stage of disease, treatment, time to progression and survival of 67 patients...

Traditional Definition of Limited Disease The authors did not discuss patient subsets with “limited-stage disease.” There are now more than enough data available to begin staging or classifying patients with small-cell lung cancer using the revised international TNM staging system.[1] We seem, however, to be historically shackled to the concept of limitedand extensive-stage disease, which inclu...
متن کاملA Case Report of Small Cell Lung Carcinoma in a Patient with Progressive Diffuse Sclerosis
Connective tissue diseases, including scleroderma, may be associated with an increased risk of lung cancer. The most common type of lung cancer associated with systemic sclerosis is adenocarcinoma or bronchoalveolar carcinoma, and small cell carcinoma is rare. This reports presents a 54-year-old non-smoker woman with a history of scleroderma who was examined due to aggravation of shortness of ...
متن کاملA proposed new imaging pathway for patients with suspected lung cancer.
AIMS PET-CT scans are routinely performed in patients with lung cancer after investigation by chest x-ray (CXR) and CT scan, when these have demonstrated potentially curable disease. If the majority of patients with lung cancer potentially suitable for curative treatment could be identified earlier in the diagnostic pathway on the basis of CXR findings they could be referred for PET-CT imaging ...
